A New GMail Logo

As one of our readers has posted, his GMail logo has changed from the original "GMail" logo to a new "Google Mail" logo. My GMail logo hasn't changed yet, so they must be testing it out on some accounts?

Here is a picture of each logo... the second one is the "new" one.

Update: The reader who reported this finding to us (residing in the UK, not Germany) has since noticed his GMail logo has switched back to the old one today... Something strange is going on.

Do please ignore the above anon comment, keep up the good work. I'll be continuing to keep your site in my rss feeds.

I would speculate that this is for two reasons -- one, because of the legal problems in the Gmail name. More significantly, though, is probably the depth of the product line including Talk, Calendar, Office (potentially), etc. This way, they can have brand consistency -- Google Mail, Google Talk, Google Office, rather than a fragmented "Gmail" among "Google Talk", etc. For example, it's not Gtalk, as a lot of people thought it might be.

But gmail rhymes with email...

I just started saying to people,"I Gmailed it to you." If it's Google Mail, i think many people will still call it Gmail.

Gee thanks crazy german gmail company...

In July, Google started to show GoogleMail.com in Germany instead of Gmail.com:

My logo was replaced with that of a woman, no not a hoax or a cache problem.
