It looks as though GMail will be introducing a new feature called "Auto-Save" which is designed to save messages that you are writing automatically incase of a browser crash. This information can be seen on the GMail What's New Page.
There is no information on this page to suggest integration between GMail and GCalendar (yet), but we will keep our eyes peeled!
